Central Park

NYC Attractions

Central Park is a city-based park in middle-upper Manhattan, New York City. Central Park is considered to be the most visited city-based park in the United States. In 2013, around 40 million visitors visited Central Park. It is also one of the most filmed locations in the world.

In 1857, the park was established on 778 acres of city-owned land. While in 1858, Frederick Law Olmsted – a landscape architect- and Calvert Vaux – an architect- won a design competition to improve and expand the park with the ‘Greensward Plan’.

Construction began in 1858 and the park’s first area was opened to the public in the winter of 1858. During the American Civil War farther south, construction continued, and in 1873, it was expanded to its current size of 843 acres.

In 1962, Central Park was named a National Historic Landmark (listed by the U.S Department of the Interior and administered by the National Park Service). For many decades, the Park was managed by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and currently, it is managed by the Central Park Conservancy under contract with the city government in a public partnership.

The Conservancy is a non-profit making organization that adds 75% of Central Park’s $65 million once a year budget and is responsible for all basic care of the 843-acre park.
