New York City is home to the headquarters of the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, and Major League Soccer. Five of the ten most expensive stadiums ever built around the world, namely MetLife Stadium, the new Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Garden, Citi Field and Barclay’s Centre are all located in the New York metropolitan area.

There have been 35 Major League Baseball World Series and 73 pennants won by New York teams, thereby New York has been described as the “Capital of Baseball”. It is only of one five metro area to have two baseball teams. There has also been 14 World Series in which two New York City teams played each other, which is known as a Subway Series and occurring most recently in 2000.

At present, the two current Major League Baseball teams in New York City are the New York Mets and the New York Yankees who compete in six games of interleague play every regular season which is also called the Subway Series. The Yankees have won a record of around 27 championships while the Mets have won the World Series twice. Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants moved to California in 1958. The Brooklyn Cyclones and Staten Island Yankees are two Minor League Baseball teams in the city.

In the National Football League, the city is represented by the New York Giants and the New York Jets. Even though both teams play their home games at MetLife Stadium in nearby East Rutherford, New Jersey, which in 2014 hosted Super Bowl XLVIII.

In the National Hockey League, the New York Rangers represent the city. The New York Islanders, who originally played in Nassau County on Long Island and moved to the Barclays Centre in 2015. There are also the New Jersey Devils in the metropolitan area who play in nearby Newark, New Jersey.

The city’s National Basketball Association teams include the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks, while the city’s Women’s National Basketball Association team is the New York Liberty. The National Invitation Tournament, which was the first national college-level basketball championship, was held in 1938 in New York.

New York City is represented by the New York City FC of Major League Soccer, who play their home games at Yankee Stadium. The New Yok Red Bulls play their home games at Red Bull Arena in nearby Harrison, New Jersey.

Historically, the city is known for New York Cosmos, the highly successful former professional soccer team which was the American home of Pelé, who is one of the world’s most famous soccer players.
