This is an annual marathon (42.195km) that courses through the five boroughs of New York City. This marathon is considered to be the largest in the world with 50,304 finishers in the year 2013. Together with the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon, it is among the pre-eminent long-distance annual running events in the United States and is considered to be one of the World Marathon Majors.
This marathon is organized by New York Road Runners Club and has been organized every year since 1970, only skipping the year 2012 due to the landfall of Hurricane Sandy.
In the past years, it has been sponsored by the financial group ING. In 2014, Tata Consultancy Services, which is a multinational information technology services, consulting and business solutions company began an eight-year term as the title sponsor. It is also headquartered in India.
This marathon is normally held on the first Sunday of November. It attracts many professional competitors and amateurs from all over the world. Due to the popularity of the race, participation is chosen largely by a lottery system for fairness amongst the competitors. Although a guaranteed entry to the marathon can be gained by meeting the requirements for the 9+1 or 9+$1K program, which have competed over 15 previous marathons or meeting time qualification standards.
